Hi, I’m Lorie Marrero creator of the Clutter Diet book and on-line program. You know, sometimes it’s really hard to get motivated to get your organizing projects done, so today I’m going to give you three ways to help make it happen.
First, you want to make it comfortable. I’m wearing a t-shirt and jeans. If I have to do a really sweaty project in the garage, also I’m going to wear a hat or a bandana, and sometimes I even need a sweatband. Often, we will turn a fan on if it’s a hot garage as well. And of course, you want to have your gear nearby and handy, and you want to have some water so you can keep yourself hydrated. You want to make sure that all of the comforts are there that are possible so that the physical things don’t distract you from making progress.
Next, you want to make it enjoyable. Now, this may sound really hard to do, but you can add a little bit more fun to the project by listening to something. So, I love to use my iPod. I have on here often an audiobook or a podcast that I’m trying to catch up on. And then if you don’t have those, of course, music is always great. You do want to be careful about what kind of project you’re working on, because if it requires a lot of concentration and decisions, such as creating a filing system, you probably can’t focus on the system and an audiobook at the same time. So that’s when you want to switch to music and kind of pace yourself along. Then you also want to make it enjoyable by working with a friend. This is a great way to get things done faster and you can trade favors with this person so you work on her closet this week and your closet next week. But it’s always more fun to work with someone else instead of doing it by yourself and maybe getting de-motivated and distracted.
Next, you want to make it urgent. Create a deadline. Having a party is one of the best things you could do to get organized, because you know people are coming over to look in your closets or open that bedroom door. So that’s the first thing you can try. Another thing you can do is to make a bet with someone. So that same friend that you might want to trade favors with, maybe you make a bet about how much you’re going to donate, or you make a bet about who is going to get a project done faster.
And lastly, we always recommend having an accountability partner, or a motivation partner if you care to call it that. I’ve been doing this for literally over 10 years; it’s how I got my book written; it’s how I do almost anything I need to get done that I’m procrastinating about.
So if you need an accountability partner, we provide that in our on-line program. You can find out more about that at https://www.clutterdiet.com/learnmore.
See you next time, and may you always be happy and grateful for having more than enough.
