Clutter Video Tip: Take Out the Trash– More Efficiently

Unless you are Oscar the Grouch, you probably don’t love trash. I’m no grouch, but I do love that you are throwing stuff away, because that means you are clearing space and hopefully getting better organized. Watch this video for five ways to take out the trash without being left holding the bag. (at http://bit.ly/TCDTrash) (Click here to watch on YouTube if you can’t see the embedded player.)

Hi, I’m Lorie Marrero, and today’s Clutter Video Tip is about trash. Yes, we’re talking trash today. And as a professional organizer, I hope you have a lot of it, because that means you’re going to be getting rid of a lot of things you don’t need. One of the mistakes we see with people’s trash is in their home offices, and they are using a little dainty bathroom trashcan like this, that while it is very cute, it does not serve you very well in the home office situation. We have found people are quite hesitant to throw a lot of things away if they think that it’s going to fill up their trashcan, so you might want to have a much larger trashcan for the home office, save this for the bathroom where you can admire it and it can be cute and everything, but you can get that utilitarian, functional thing to make you throw away more trash where you need it the most.

If you have even bigger trash needs, and we often do when we’re doing organizing projects, this is my favorite organizing product of all time, and it is a pop-up trashcan. So, before I found these, I was running around trying to find a doorknob to hang a trashcan liner on, and then it wouldn’t stay open, and it was really annoying for everybody involved, so these are actually made for lawn and garden work, for raking leaves, so it holds the bag open really well, and then you could just throw things in it from across the room and get rid of a lot of your stuff. I always like to put in a couple of extra liners first in the bottom of the trashcan so that if I move the trashcan around away from the box of liners, then I have a couple of them handy right there at the point of view so we can just refill and keep going. Then I put the main liner in and ready to go. I do want to say a word about these liners: you want to use heavy duty liners whenever possible, and I have a picture here of the box that you can see where they have the measurement of how thicknthe bags are, you want to do a minimum of 1.1 mill. of thickness so that you avoid breakage. What you’re going to have is these awful messes where the bags break and you’re trying to haul these heavy things around, and it just creates a lot more work and heartache, so you don’t want that.

And if you have bigger trash hauling needs, even bigger than this, even bigger than heavy duty bags, you can call our preferred hauling partner, College Hunk’s Hauling, and they will come and take large things like old kitchen sinks and toilets and other kinds of debris, they will take things from your upstairs and haul them down for you. They’ll fill up their truck, they’ll recycle, reuse, repurpose as much as possible, they’ll take your donations to Goodwill for you, so it’s kind of a one-stop shop to get rid of lots of stuff when you’ve done an organizing project. And if you mention Clutter Diet when you call them, you can save $30. So again that’s College Hunk’s Hauling.

And if you need extra help and advice getting all these projects done, you know we can help you for free with our 7-Day Quickstart Program, you can find out about this at clutterdiet.com/learnmore.

See you next time, and may you always be happy and grateful for having more than enough.
