Found Money: Did You Forget About That Account?

Moneyandcreditcard2Disorganized financial accounts, today’s mobile society, and other factors have combined to create huge lists of unclaimed property. Something as simple as a forgotten utility company deposit may have ended up in state coffers just waiting to be claimed by the rightful owner. Could this be you?

You can go to www.unclaimed.org to find a list of all of the state websites where you can search by your name to see if you are eligible for money to be returned to you. For example, click here if you live (or have lived) in Texas to search the Comptroller of Public Accounts site.

Periodically it’s a good idea to check in with these sites for each state where you have lived in the last several years. I’ve had clients find a few hundred dollars from an overpaid hospital bill, for example. I know a lot of people could use this cash right now, too, so go check and let us know here in the comments if you get something! Wouldn’t that be fun?

It definitely pays to be organized, but I guess sometimes it can pay to be disorganized… it just pays later.  🙂
