Hi. I’m organizing and lifestyle expert Lorie Marrero. What do you think if someone says to you that they will try to come to your party? Do you think immediately, “Oh, this person’s not coming?” That’s probably true. If someone says they’re going to try to make it, they usually don’t. That’s a very important word “try” and you know, Yoda, in the Star Wars movies was famous for saying, “Try not, do or do not. There is no try.” That’s right. You either do something or you don’t. The word “try” is a very tricky word. And I want to talk today about your language that you’re choosing to use about yourself and about your situation.
I hear this all the time in even small ways like the user name that someone gives themselves when they join our on-line program for Clutter Diet. Maybe they have named themselves something like “Messy Marvin.” And, you know, if you’re trying to make a change and you’re trying to not have clutter in your life, naming yourself “Messy Marvin” is almost like a smoker who is trying to quit and names themselves “Two Packs a Day.” This is a destiny that you’re assigning to yourself. If you’re going to say “I’m Messy Marvin,” then how are you going to change that? Think about a more positive name you can give yourself when you’re trying to make a change.
I hear people say things like: “I’m not an organized person.” “This mess is killing me.” “I’ll never get the hang of this.” Think about those negative words and those permanent assignments that those statements provide. So I want you to think about what you would say to your best friend or to your child and if you wouldn’t say that, whatever is in your head, to your best friend or your child, then don’t say it to yourself. I want you to be kind and be strategic.
I’ll leave you with this little passage that I found that is anonymous. I don’t know who to attribute it to, but it’s very powerful. “Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” It all starts with your thoughts and then your words. So choose them carefully.
We’ll see you next time, and may you always be happy and grateful for having more than enough.
