Yesterday I attended the Texas Conference for Women here in Austin. I heard some amazing speakers like Carly Fiorina and Elizabeth Vargas of ABC.
One person I met there was Cali Williams Yost, the president of Work Life Fit, and a blogger extraordinaire. She is an expert on what people usually call "work/life balance" and helps companies figure out how to offer more flexible schedules to employees. She calls it "fit," not balance, because there is really no such thing as a 50/50 true balance of work and life that is constant and even typical among people. Fit is a great way of stating this, because it’s about what works for you. Maybe you want to work a lot, and that is your fit… I really enjoyed what Cali had to say. She encourages people to stop talking about what they don’t have and talk instead about what they could have. Most of the time if you ask your employer for a flexible work schedule they will say yes, at least to a trial period!
People ask me a lot about work/life balance because we help people get organized, and many of us are just so overwhelmed. I find myself saying so many of the same things to people that Cali is saying, for example, her blog post about saying no– click here to read. Saying no is a huge way to save time and make room for what is more important in your life. (See also my previous post here about saying no.)
Consider your Work/Life Fit… could you make some changes? What are the possibilities? Cali has a book here that you can buy if you are ready to get serious!
I like the word “fit”. Balance is so much more than just keeping a bunch of plates on poles spinning so they don’t fall. It’s about living in alignment with a personally-held set of values.
The trick is in discovering what your values are in the first place. Then it’s simply a matter of removing misalignments and creating new alignments.
Thanks for your post.
